Hmmm … suddenly the goal for a free/open java seems to be further away then ever …
Simon Phipps clarified in his blog that by “months rather than years” [away from open java] he was in fact referring to “double-digit months” which somewhat reminds me of the endless odyssey of the king of vaporware – Duke Nukem Forever.
Sure, his worries to create a source- and bytecode-compatible java base should be the top priority to ensure general success … and I don’t want to be the one responsible for making such a decision … but imagine how many years would fit into 99 months ..
I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the quest for a free/open java won’t end never-end like other ambitious projects.

One of the most charismatic singer-songwriters passed away …

Grant McLennan, founding member of The Go-Betweens, died at the age of 48 at his home in Brisbane, Australia.
I have to confess that because of my young age I was not able to listen to his music from the very beginning, but I am sure that anyone who is familiar with any of his work will understand what an enormous loss his death is.

Yesterday I received the notification that there will be a Google Code Jam Europe this summer. Last years Code Jam was a “worldwide event” which seemed to be well organized and was quite entertaining (even though i wasn’t THAT successful
).
The whole competition takes place in TopCoders coding arenas which is basically a java applet which provides multiuser chat for small groups of people competing against each other. There are several programming languages available which will be compiled and unit tested in a service oriented way (meaning you submit your code through the applet and get the compiler logs).
The whole event consists of several rounds with or without challenge phases, … (be sure to read and understand the rules
)
Registration is open until the 23rd of May.

just submitted my proposal for the Google SOC 2006, I decided that I would like to contribute to the Moodle Project because they are using Moodle here at JKU. I hope I can integrate a Global Search module into Moodle. So then press your thumbs!

oh dear this night phil decided to fall out of his bed … puh, I woke up shocked when I heard him fall.
now I’m very tired! A few moments ago I created a dyndns.org account for phil’s granddad and forgot the password within 2 seconds.
we’d better not hit the road today!

… you know … I think Phil hates me now, I guided him straight trough San Francisco downtown during rush-hour
OMG was that beautyful, funny and probably very very stressful for Phil, but you know he’s qualified enough to start as a cab driver over here.
So our plans: tomorrow we have tight schedules; theres Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, Treasure Island and lots of interesting stuff around here.
I hope we find our car again on friday, we put it in some residential area and went back into Downtown to Ellis crossing Franklin. This was kinda fun trip for first impressions, theres really lots of those up and down roads you know from the movies and very many skateboarders round.
Looking forward to read from you soon ..
.. Matthias

We savely arrived at Cambria today. You can’t imagine how small this town is. Still the hostel (Bridge Inn Hostel in Cambria) is really nice and the owners are easy. We just had some good Burgers at a small Burger place + a Corona to that. Really relaxing. Also we have a good bottle of red wine we’re close to open.

I’m fine with sleep, but matthias seems very jet-lagged.. he got up at 0400 in the morning, solved some sudokus and when he got back to bed he started sawing a log Xp. Well, have to live with it
… We started planning our trip up to S.F., looking at rental cars, hostels etc.
Take care,
phil
